because, you know, if i was thinking about the speech that president obama gave, while it was very powerful and hopeful, there was one more piece that i think needed to be add fd you're thinking analytically, and that is even if that engagement fails, at least we know we tried and at least we know and the world knows where the responsibility lies. i think president obama's been good at helping orchestrate sanctions against iran because everyone recognized it was iran that stole an election from its own people. it was iran that continued to violate u.n. prohibitions against its nuclear enrichment activities, and obama managed to use his willingness to engage with iran when his hand was reached out and it was slapped back by ahmadinejad. he was then in a position to get tough with iran. so we're in this dilemma. i'm afraid engagement cannot guarantee a happy outcome but i agree with you, obama was signaling that he's willing to go the extra mile on the diplomatic front before he has to face that stark choice about how you prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon if iran keeps up th

benghazi, when it initially began, was a way at getting at obama through hillary clinton, right, during the campaign, but it then evolved into something else that was about her for exactly that purpose. if the idea today was to ding her up memorably going into 2016, i don't think that was accomplished. rand paul did what he was supposed to do, it will make his base happy. it will not sway any votes. if i saw correctly, 37% of republicans approve of her. for her, that is not terrible. i mean, she has always been a pretty polarizing figure. she is leaving state department with, as you say, incredibly high approval ratings, and i don't think today did anything to change that trajectory. >> one of the pieces of sound we've played on this network and will continue to be played and will play right now, the moment hillary talks about the caskets coming home. it recalled a memory i have of the president when he was issuing the defense in the debate about how much this mattered in the administration and the contention that somehow this wasn't a big deal for them. let's play that sound, then i'd

-style push to get those stiff gun measures passed, that you just talked about. the obama administration has sort of taken this tactic in the past, during the payroll tax cut fight, during the student loan fight, really circumventing congress and trying to build a ground swell of support among the people, to pressure congress to get what it wants to get done passed. so in this case, that is the stiffer gun law. so you're going to see vice president biden out today, holding that roundtable, talking about gun legislation. he'll be joined by his cabinet secretaries as well as a democratic senator, tim kaine, to really try to talk to the people about why he thinks this for gun legislation is a good idea. but, of course, as you just mapped out, there is a lot of opposition to this, particularly in states like virginia. so they're hoping to get moderates on their side, so that when this really does go to a fight, they will have the votes in the end. senior administration officials tell me, privately, they think that there is a lot of support for universal background checks and for limiting high-ca
